In a historic move, the newly formed government of Nepal has announced that it will issue a formal apology to Dalits and other historically marginalised communities. This decision aims to address decades of discrimination and social exclusion.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen Shah, took oath on March 27. Soon after taking office, his government approved a 100-point Governance Reform Agenda during its first Cabinet meeting. The proposed apology is one of the key highlights.

Acknowledging Historical Injustice

According to the official plan, the government will recognise the long-standing injustices faced by Dalits due to social practices and past state policies.

These inequalities have affected access to education, employment, and dignity for generations.

The government has stated that the apology will be issued within 15 days. Along with the apology, programmes will be launched to promote justice, equality, and socio-economic upliftment.

A Significant Step Forward

This move is being seen as one of the most important steps taken by any Nepali government to address caste-based discrimination.

While laws against caste discrimination already exist, implementation has often been weak. Social attitudes have also been slow to change.

By formally acknowledging past wrongs, the government aims to send a strong message that discrimination has no place in modern Nepal.

Beyond Symbolism

Experts say an apology is important, but real change depends on action.

Policies must focus on education, jobs, legal protection, and awareness.

Without strong execution, the impact may remain symbolic.

Nepal’s decision marks a turning point in its social journey.

It reflects recognition of historical injustice and a commitment to a fairer future.

The coming months will decide whether this promise leads to real change.
