Backstabber’: DMK Slams Congress as TVK Opens Talks With Left Parties Amid Government Formation Push

Chennai: Tamil Nadu politics has entered a phase of open political confrontation after reports emerged that the Congress may extend support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the race to form the next government in the state. The development has triggered sharp reactions from the DMK camp, with senior party voices accusing Congress of “betrayal” and “backstabbing” long-standing alliance politics.

The political crisis intensified further after discussions reportedly began between TVK and Left parties, including CPI and CPI(M), raising the possibility of a broader secular coalition around Vijay.

DMK Attacks Congress Over TVK Support

Sources within the DMK have strongly criticized Congress for allegedly moving closer to TVK despite years of alliance politics between the two parties. Several DMK leaders reportedly described the move as a “political backstab,” arguing that Congress was helping weaken the Dravidian alliance structure for short-term political calculations.

The tension has exposed major cracks inside opposition bloc politics in Tamil Nadu, especially at a time when national and regional parties are attempting to counter the BJP’s expansion strategy in South India.

Political analysts believe this may become one of the most serious alliance breakdowns in Tamil Nadu politics in recent years.

TVK Emerges as the Centre of Power

According to current election trends and political reports, TVK has emerged with around 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Majority mark: 118 seats
TVK’s reported strength: Around 108 seats

This means Vijay is only around 10 seats away from forming the government.

With Congress support and possible Left backing, TVK could potentially cross the majority mark and stake claim to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.

Communist Parties Hold Internal Discussions

Reports suggest CPI and CPI(M) leadership are internally discussing whether to support a TVK-led coalition government. Left parties are expected to evaluate:

  • ideological compatibility
  • anti-BJP positioning
  • secular coalition strategy
  • regional political stability

TVK’s repeated emphasis on social justice, welfare politics, and anti-Hindutva positioning is believed to be one reason why Left parties are considering cooperation.

Vijay’s Political Positioning

Throughout the election campaign, Vijay positioned TVK around:

  • secular governance
  • welfare politics
  • youth-focused campaigning
  • Dravidian social justice themes

The party’s political messaging frequently referenced Periyar, Ambedkar, and rationalist ideology, which politically places TVK closer to the Dravidian-secular ecosystem rather than BJP-led politics.

This ideological positioning has now become central to ongoing alliance negotiations.

Collapse of Traditional Tamil Nadu Political Structure?

For decades, Tamil Nadu politics revolved around:

  • DMK
  • AIADMK

But TVK’s sudden rise has disrupted that structure dramatically.

Political observers say the election represents:

  • the rise of personality-based politics
  • social media-driven mobilization
  • weakening attachment to traditional cadre parties
  • generational political shifts among urban and young voters

The election has also revived debates over whether Tamil Nadu is entering a permanent coalition era after decades of stable Dravidian dominance.

What Happens Next?

Three major possibilities are currently being discussed in political circles:

1. TVK-led coalition government

Congress + Left + regional support helps Vijay become Chief Minister.

2. DMK attempts political counter-strategy

DMK may try to block alliance arithmetic through negotiations with smaller parties.

3. Political instability and prolonged negotiations

If no alliance reaches the majority mark, Tamil Nadu could face uncertainty before government formation.

For now, the biggest political question in India remains whether Vijay can convert electoral momentum into a working coalition strong enough to govern Tamil Nadu.
